Nutrition For Diabetics
- For diabetics, carbohydrates, the main source of energy, constitute 50-60% of daily calories. The amount and type of carbohydrates eaten determine post-prandial glucose levels. Different types of sugars, honey, jaggery, desserts, sodas, white flour cereals and many processed foods make glucose levels spike and should be avoided. Roots and tubers must be used sparingly.
- Mixed whole grains, vegetables, some fruits, beans, oats, nuts and seeds raise blood glucose levels gradually and steadily. 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables and at least half the cereals as whole grains work very well.
- A minimum daily fiber intake of 25-30 g is recommended. Fiber also lowers cholesterol, cancer risk and blood pressure.
- Up to 20% of daily calories should be derived from lean proteins sources such as fish, low fat milk, soy, beans and nuts.
