Q.3. Are Insulin and Diet Therapy Partners in Diabetes Health?
Yes, Insulin therapy conjugates with Diet therapy in maintenance of target blood glucose levels. Insulin helps entry of sugar from the bloodstream into the cells The type of insulin your doctor recommends will depend on how your body responds to the insulin and also your convenience, to some extent, with regard to your diet requirements and meal timings but you will eventually learn how to match your insulin doses with mealtimes and exercise times and have a good quality of life.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Food for thought!
As different drugs have different effects in the control of blood sugar in individual diabetics......will the same be true when a person eats the suggested 2-3 leaves from the 'Insulin plant'- (Costus igeus)? Can the positive results seen in rats be duplicated in Humans?

A study conducted on rats comparing the effect of the anti diabetic drug `Glibencalmide' against `insulin plant leaf powder' showed that the reduction in the fasting and postprandial blood sugar levels with leaves of insulin plant was comparable with that obtained with Glibenclamide

In effect the insulin leaf powder helps control blood sugar as effectively as the drug and this holds a lot of promise especially with the rise in Diabetics from lower socio economic sector.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar In Type 2 Diabetes people do secrete insulin but they are also insulin resistant. Regular exercises will make their muscles more sensitive to insulin and thus less amount of insulin will be needed to control blood sugar level without staining their beta cells to produce more and more amounts of insulin.
To make muscles more sensitive to insulin:

1. Increase the level of physical activity in your daily life especially if you are sedentary. You should participate in games and other activities, or visit a gym and workout. Participate in physical chores around the house and it will also assist in keeping your muscles active.

2. Eat a low calorie diet and choose carbohydrate foods which have a low glycemic load. Increase the vegetable faction (half the plate should be steamed or cooked vegetables) as well as protein content so that you are eating 0.8-1 gm /kg body weight (2.2 pounds)

3. If you are overweight or obese you should lose some weight by doing workouts in gym or exercises at home.

Poonam A recent study demonstrated that people who slept less than 6 hours a night were four and a half times more likely to develop abnormal blood sugar readings in six years compared with those who slept longer. Another study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) showed that even partial sleep restriction in a single night was able to reduce insulin sensitivity by 19-25%.

Mrinal Is Avandia a safe and important option in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes.
F.D.A. said Tuesday that studies demonstrate conclusively that Avandia is far more dangerous to the heart than a similar medicine, Actos, made by Takeda.

There is further evidence that patients in a crucial trial of Avandia who suffered heart attacks did not have their problems included in the trial’s final tally. Internal company documents made public in recent days show that the company hid from the public crucial information about Avandia’s safety woes.
What is going on here?
Lets wait and see the rulings soon to be made by the FDA.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Fantastic news about the discovery of a novel insulin. Suffering for diabetics will now reduce and the everyday insulin pricks for controlling their blood sugar will be the thing of the past. A team of Indian scientists have discovered a single shot of insulin that could help keep sugar levels under control for more than a month as against 24 hrs now.

Smita Singh Ms Sangeeta, It is good that you manage your blood sugar through exercise alone. Exercise is one of the treatments of diabetes but it never work alone. You have to adjust your diet that favours your blood sugar level along with exercise. A diabetic diet includes use of balanced diet with low glycemic foods and fibrous foods. You may log on our diabetic management program and also get a customized diet plan.
