  • Physical activity
    Adequate physical activity prevents chronic health conditions (high cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood sugar) and promotes weight loss. It also improves your energy levels, mood, bone health, prevents cancer and helps you live longer.
  • Weight
    Being overweight and having a high waist to hip ratio are both risk factors for developing heart disease, high BP, stroke, cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome and sleep apnea.
  • Alcohol consumption
    is a causal factor in more than 60 ma or types of diseases and injuries and results in approximately 2.5 million deaths each year (WHO, 2011). Liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, many cancers, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are associated with heavy alcohol consumption.
  • Stress
    A study of nearly 3000 people in Finland showed that men are more affected by major life events than women. Stress increases psychological problems and impairs health.

Vidya Yadav ED: A Sign of Heart Disease?
In some cases, ED can be a warning sign of more serious disease. A 2010 study suggests ED is a strong predictor of heart attack, stroke, and death from cardiovascular disease. The researchers say all men diagnosed with ED should be evaluated for cardiovascular disease. This does not mean every man with ED will develop heart disease, or that every man with heart disease has ED, but patients should be aware of the link.

Sangeetha Narayana Swamy To be healthy and to increase our energy levels we need to have a physical activity for 30 - 45 mins per day and do it 5 times in a week at least. Also consume a diet that provides 25- 30 gms of fiber, all necessary vitamins and minerals, has complex carbs, good protein and fats. Smoking and Alcohol should be avoided as they are proved to be detrimental to our health. Last but not the least, consume 10 - 12 glasses of water per day.

Sadashiv Rao What do you think of the Calorie Restriction with Optimum Nutrition (CRON), also called the Longevity Diet? Is it another cult society or does it really have the potential to increase the average and maximum life span.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear Mr Rao, if a person is overweight, as dietitians we always advice a diet where we lower the calories but not the other nutrients. However we do not adhere to any one diet like CRON etc. We tweak and customise a person’s everyday diet to improve lifestyle and increase life or longevity.
Also quoting a study titled `Modifiable Factors Associated with Survival and Function to Age 90 Years ‘in a prospective cohort study of 2357 healthy men’. The findings were that modifiable healthy behaviours during early elderly years, including smoking abstinence, weight management, blood pressure control, and regular exercise, are associated not only with enhanced life span in men but also with good health and function during older age. This was published in Archives of Internal medicine dated Feb 11 2008

Sharma Its really so simple guys -JUST 30 -40 minutes a day of regular physical activity contributes to health by reducing the heart rate, decreasing the risk for cardiovascular disease, and reducing the amount of bone loss that is associated with age and osteoporosis.

"Don't smoke. A recent Norwegian study showed that 41% of male heavy smokers were dead by 70, vs. 14% of non-smokers.
Alcohol abuse is an underappreciated major cause of illness and death among men.
Eating a few fruits and vegetables, exercising and limiting alcohol should help, too".
