Cholesterol Watch - Statins May Cause DiabetesHyperlipidemias are very common amongst the general population. Treatment includes lifestyle modifications like - a change in diet, increase in physical activity, controlling smoking and alcohol consumption, along with prescription of statins in most cases. Until now a large number of individuals with high cholesterol have been relying on statins to reduce cholesterol levels. It has been reported that more than 20 million Americans take statins.

The FDA recently raised questions about the side effects of long term regular statin use. A careful examination of data from large clinical trials is indicating the development of Type 2 diabetes as a side effect of overdosing with statins. Based on this data, the FDA developed safety labels which will now state warnings about diabetes and memory loss. The announcement stated that the risk was "small" and should not affect long term use. With regards to memory loss the data are still somewhat ambiguous but warrant further monitoring. Statins have been in use for over 30 years, but their correlation with development of diabetes was seen only about a decade ago.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Statins were once thought to be relatively safe and prescribed widely for their cholesterol lowering ability. Now the side effects of Statins wary from just annoying muscle cramps to liver problems and now type 2 Diabetes and cancer.
It makes more sense to reduce cholesterol (LDL & VLDL)in our diet instead of medication and suffering from other kinds of problems. Simple changes like-
# Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole-grains, which are high in fiber, low in fat and naturally cholesterol-free.
# Keeping total fat intake between 25 and 35 percent of your daily calories, with most fats coming from sources of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as fish, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils.
# Using naturally occurring, unhydrogenated vegetable oils such as canola, safflower, sunflower or olive oil, often.
# Selecting processed foods made with unhydrogenated oil rather than partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated vegetable oils or saturated fat.
# Selecting foods with "0 g trans fat" on the Nutrition Facts label.
# Reducing consumption of foods like french fries, doughnuts, cookies, crackers, muffins, pies and cakes that are high in trans fat and saturated fats.
# Regularly exercising and being active the whole day.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT!!

Samantha Many Cardiologists are of the opinion that the only people who should be on a statin drug are middle-aged males with coronary artery disease as, for these patients, the benefits outweigh the potential risks—that is -their anti-inflammatory and blood thinning properties and not for its cholesterol lowering ability.
They are totally against statin drugs for cholesterol lowering in younger to middle-aged women as risks far outweigh the benefits.

Poonam Statins are one of the most widely prescribed drugs worldwide. While they may play an imprtant role in the treatment of high risk cases, lifestyle modifications can never be emphasised enough as a means of preventing heart disease .Drugs must never be used to replace good lifestyle choices.
