True, its normally upto the (diabetic) person to mange his/her disorder well enough that they can lead a very productive and fruitful life as any normal person.
Management of diabetes is not just about keeping a check on blood sugar but one should also control cholesterol, blood pressure, weight and have regular check up of eyes and kidney function to prevent complications.

As very appropriately depicted in article-diet, exercise, self monitoring of blood glucose, insulin and\or medications form the cornerstone of diabetes management and are equally important.
