Sodium Chloride (NaCl) better known as common SALT is probably one of the most critical lifesustaining elements as it is needed for normal body functioning.

Its importance in our wellbeing is often overlooked, simply because we take it for granted.

Too little and it can stop our beating heart; and contracting of all muscles. It helps maintaining electrolyte and fluid balances in your body. It enables our brain and nerves to communicate and function properly. It is a life enabling mineral, that our body needs only in the smallest amounts each day. High intake of salt is associated with hypertension and edema and it is also known to increase calcium excretion. Over time it may lead to osteoporosis. On the other hand, eating too little salt can however lead to 'hyponatremia.'

SODIUM / SALT
Sodium is a major mineral and is found in the fluid surrounding the cells in your body. It Is necessary to regulate blood pressure and fluid volume; sodium also helps maintain pH balance. Your muscles and nervous system also need sodium to function properly.

RECOMMENDED DAILY INTAKE
1 to 3 years 1.0 g per day
4 to 8 years 1.2 g per day
9 to 50 years 1.5 g per day
51 to 70 years 1.3 mg per day
71+ years 1.2 g per day

The most common form of sodium is table salt, however sodium occurs naturally in most foods.

FOODS HIGH IN SODIUM
Dairy products, beets and celery are all significant sources of sodium. Sodium is added to many processed foods in the form of additives that are used as preservatives and flavor enhancers. Most diets contain more than enough sodium, so deficiency is rare.

HIGH SODIUM DIET - HYPERTENSION
Eating a diet that is high in sodium is associated with high blood pressure and can increase calcium loss, which can increase the risk of osteoporosis. The Institute of Medicine suggests an intake of no more than 2,400 mg per day, but the typical diet contains about twice that amount.

Also Known As: sodium chloride, monosodium glutamate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium benzoate

Alzheimer's Disease Treatment
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, which is the loss of intellectual and social abilities severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. Dementia occurs in people with Alzheimer's disease because healthy brain tissue degenerates, causing a steady decline in memory and mental abilities.

Anemia
If you have anemia, people may say you have tired blood. That's because anemia - a condition in which there aren't enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your tissues - can make you feel tired.
