The Importance Of Healthy Eating
It's midnight and Amol is still awake. His mother Mohini is worried as her son cannot sleep due to examination fear. Amol thinks his life is quite difficult due to these exams and asks his mother for a bowl full of butter popcorn in order to destress himself Same is the case with Mr. Mehra, Amol's father who is preparing for an event in office and is not able to sleep as he thinks that something or the other will go wrong in his office tomorrow even after making all perfect arrangements. Mohini is worried for her son and her husband who most of the time dwell on potato chips, colas, high fat foods, caffeinated beverages to destress themselves.

Mr. Mehra and Amol don't realise that in this fast paced life we are not only competing with others but also with the self. All of us are being examined at some point or the other by employer, family, friends, relatives and self. We as human beings in the race of accomplishing goals keep giving exams to achieve professional targets, to academic degrees and testimonials and even to receive love of the near and dear ones. Exams are considered as essential evils - essential as there is no other means of accessing one's capability and evils because most people shiver by its name. Exams give jitters, goose bumps, and sleepless nights to most of us and thus God in all his manifestations becomes a real hit with students, they engage in variety of religious and psychological ploys. Exam preparation not only requires hard work, determination but also mental and physical strength which comes through a proper diet and exercise routine. This calls for an intake of healthy nutritious foods, thirty minutes of physical exercise besides daily routine, right mental attitude and adequate rest to the body. Dependence on high calorie energy drinks, caffeinated beverages, fatty convenience foods, little sleep doesn't serve the purpose. Therefore good nutrition and some amount of physical activity are prerequisites as they keep the mind and body in high spirits for goal achievement.

Useful Tips to improve performance and concentration abilities during examinations:
Consume -
•    Iron rich foods (rice flakes, pomegranate, watermelon, dark green leafy vegetables) - helps maintain physical and mental energy
•    Protein Rich foods (soy, low fat milk, fish etc) - help boost brain
•    Start your day with breakfast-the intelligent meal
•    Make fruits your best snack buddies - contain powerful antioxidants and energy
•    Never forget powerful vegetables
•    Eat small meals at regular intervals
•    Keep yourself hydrated
•    Twenty minutes of physical activity three times a day

Sulochana My daughter who otherwise eats healthily gets a craving for a nice big slice of dark chocolate cake at least once during the exam period. I let her have it as I know she normally does not binge. I am sure her body need sthose extra fat calories

Kanika Jain As rightly said by Ritu, it is very important to have proper wholesome breakfast especially during examination times. In today’s fast paced life, many people skip their breakfast. Some due to lack of time in morning, some, under this impression that skipping breakfast would help them lose weight. However, skipping first meal of the day is not a good thing for our body functioning. It not only kick starts our day but also help in breaking overnight fasting.

Kanchan Saggi Hello Sarasen,

Thank you for your query!!

Iron is a very important micronutrient and should be nutritionally met in adequate amounts by our diet. It is required for the formation of blood cells in our body and more importantly it helps in the production of hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is a protein molecule that carries oxygen and nutrients to all the tissues and organs in our body and thereby nourishing them day in and day out. If our body is well nourished, it keeps you physically and mentally active & energetic. That's why Iron rich foods are important and should be regularly included in your diet.

Thanks
