Nutrition For The Older Adult
Dear Friends
Globally, older adults make up a significantly large percentage of the population. In India today, we have the largest number of adults over age 65; approximately 80 million and in America the fastest growing segment of the population is age 85 and above. While this can all be attributed to improved access to health care, better socio-economic conditions and advances in medical technologies, the fact remains that healthy longevity as defined by absence of any medical condition is on the decline. A large percentage of older adults have at least one chronic condition by age 50 and many have multiple conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, diagnosed arthritis and heart disease. The alterations that occur due to the presence of chronic illnesses (appetite, poly-pharmacy, nutrient absorption etc) coupled with the physiological and psychosocial changes that occur with aging place the older adult at an increased risk for nutritional problems, especially under-nutrition.
Further compounding this problem is the increased prevalence of overweight and obesity in the older adult. Today, three of ten in America and two of ten older adults in India are either overweight or obese which puts them at an even greater risk for chronic illnesses. From just a decade or two ago, when physicians and dietitians were concerned more about under- nutrition in the older adult, we now have a higher prevalence of overweight/obesity which is playing havoc on their health and wellness.
Early interventions with appropriate diet and lifestyle recommendations can delay, ameliorate and even prevent potential adverse outcomes in a segment of the population that has contributed so much to economic upliftment around the globe. Read more as our well-trained dietitians provide practical solutions to everyday nutritional and health issues facing the older adult.
We thank you for your continued support and look forward to providing you with the best possible coverage of nutrition and health related issues in 2011.
Sincerely.
